Life of a student-media student

I love school. I do. But I am already suffering from “Senioritus.” Being a student leader and role model has its perks and its challenges. Don’t get me wrong—by getting involved with student life and leadership, as well as student media here at UAA, it has opened up so many doors for me such as awesome internships and amazing experiences. And it allows me to build up my portfolio in a professional manner.

Along with the joy and excitement, though, comes its stress and loads of responsibilities.

I am a planner, so when I figure out that I will have absolutely no free time this fall semester, I freak out.

Let me tell you what I have going on:
  1. Six (6) classes. SIX! That’s 16 credits.
  2. Two back-to-back gym classes that leave my body aching.

  3. JPC capstone class that most students wet their pants signing up for. I am writing a 25-page research paper.
  4. Radio Gig—producing content for two radio shows as well as writing a story three days out of the four I work.
  5. I am KRUA’s sports reporter, so I call all the women’s home basketball games.
  6. Preparing to produce and anchor the new coaches show for the UAA hockey team; write scripts, make story packages, etc.
  7. Dealing with a faulty car. Most of the time it does not let me take my key out of the ignition, and the back window does not stay shut.
  8. The baby shower planner. My sister is pregnant, and it’s my duty as sister and best friend to plan this celebration in less than a month.
  9. “Me time.”
  10. Sleep.
As my second to last semester ever of college, it should not be this demanding and busy. I am not asking for sympathy or anything. I know my limits and I am the one who chose it to be this busy. I am just playing catch up for when I only took three or four classes my freshman year.

When you hear the counselors and your peers telling you to take 15 credits per semester… DO IT!

If you want to graduate in four years TAKE 15 CREDITS PER SEMESTER/30 CREDITS PER ACADEMIC YEAR! It will free up your summer, and not unofficially diagnose you with pre-senioritus.

As for me I will be just fine. It’s only the first week of school—I am still getting in the flow.

So if you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed like me at this point, stop, relax, and make sure you are getting time for yourself. Whether it’s listening to music by yourself, painting, or even inducing yourself in a mini-coma… “Me-Time” is the most important time to keep yourself sane.

Follow me for the next three weeks to see how my mentality has evolved over the course of the beginning of the semester.

It’s a great day to be a Seawolf.
